Reviews and comments about the debut album, First Lines:
"2018 has been a year of many outstanding and surprising new records. One worth special notice is First Lines by Swedish trumpeter Erik Palmberg and his quartet. Featuring mostly original compositions, the music is fresh and crisp yet steeped in jazz tradition."
- Article by Jim Worsley, Allaboutjazz
"With strong accompaniment from Dromberg, Nahlin, and Waern, Erik Palmberg has expressed his own jazz sensibilities within the embodiment of vintage and quintessential jazz.
These rich compositions are notably tempered and melodic. The arrangements enable four skillful and accomplished musicians to fuse together as an ensemble, as well as to stretch and shine individually."
- Album review, Jim Worsley, Allaboutjazz
"DN congratulates: Erik Palmberg, jazz trumpeter. Airy, lyrical jazz that sounds as if it was recorded in the heyday of jazz in the 50's " - Hans Kronbrink, DN
"I enjoyed hearing you weave your way through the changes especially HOW DEEP and CON ALMA, both not easy. One must “Pay Attention”to handle them honestly. You are so fortunate to have been influenced by Jan Allan…but so am I !"
- International jazz trumpet artist, Bobby Shew
Concert reviews
"The album features two more standard songs, Dizzy Gillespies Con Alma and the Bill Evans ballad Turn out the Stars, which provide rich samples of Palmberg's lyrical qualities. The composition Natural Rhythm justifies its title with a fluid play from the whole group, which in the conventional setting gets extra pregnancy. Pianist Anton Dromberg matches Palmberg's airy, thoughtful playing style well in the concluding duo number Sortie. Erik Palmberg's record debut feels well timed " - Album review, Ulf Thelander, Orkesterjournalen
Bebop mixed with a lot of lyrical songs. ..also superb performances by other participants: pianist Anton Dromberg, bassist Peder Waern and drummer Gustav Nahlin. ..a nice debut of a quartet we will probably hear more from. " - Album review Lira, Andreas Lagercrantz
Erik Palmberg Quartet feat Karin Hammar, Stockholm Jazz Festival
"Erik Palmberg Quartet put the stripped-down, melodic lyrical in focus" - Concert review, Ulf Thelander, Orkesterjournalen
Horncraft, Stockholm Jazz Festival
"A number of musicians perform large-scale feats, a favor to be able to listen to them up close. Album debutant- exclamation mark, trumpeter Erik Palmberg, was for me a new acquaintance" - Concert review, Kulturbloggen
Words from the judges:
"...a musician that knows how to treat a standard, adding a new approach, a fresh air but keeping the original meaning of the song. Nice instrumentation with Fender Rhodes too."
